Malta’s most iconic film set turned family attraction – everything you need to know before you visit.

Tucked into the rocky shoreline of Anchor Bay, on the northwestern tip of Malta near Mellieha, Popeye Village – officially known as Sweethaven Village Malta – is one of the island’s most photographed landmarks and one of the top family attractions in the Mediterranean.

Originally built in 1979-1980 as the film set for the live-action musical Popeye starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall, this collection of colourful wooden houses was never demolished after filming wrapped. Instead, it was converted into an open-air theme park that now welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Whether you are wondering is Popeye Village worth it, looking for Popeye Village tickets and exact prices by season, trying to find the Popeye Village Malta location, or planning your visit from Gozo or St Julian’s – this guide covers absolutely everything. We visited the site ourselves and took all the photos you see in this article.

What Is Popeye Village Malta?

Foto originale del film Popeye Malta 1980 con Robin Williams e Shelley Duvall sul set di Sweethaven Village Malta

Sweethaven Village Malta sits directly on the water at Anchor Bay, Mellieha, in northern Malta. What many people call Popeye Island Malta is actually a peninsula – the wooden village extends from the limestone cliffs right down to the sea, giving it the appearance of a floating village from certain angles, especially from the famous viewpoint above.

This is the original Malta Popeye film set, built by a Hollywood production crew over seven months using eight tons of nails, 2,000 litres of paint, and wood imported from the Netherlands and Canada. After the 1980 movie wrapped, the Maltese government decided to keep the set standing rather than demolishing it. It is one of the only surviving major film sets in the world that became a permanent visitor attraction.

The village consists of around 20 original wooden structures including Popeye’s house, Olive Oyl’s home, the fire station, the bakery, the town square, the post office, and the sawmill. Each building has been maintained and repurposed with interactive exhibits, character meet-and-greets, and family activities. There is also a Popeye Comic Museum, a Cinema showing a 15-minute documentary about the construction of the film set, and a Robin Williams shrine honouring the late actor who played Popeye.

The site covers three distinct zones:

  • Zone 1 (Upper) – Car park, Popeye Diner restaurant, kids’ splash pools, play pools for ages 3-8, mini golf, and mini assault course.
  • Zone 2 (Middle) – The village itself with all the wooden buildings, the main square, the Sea Farers Restaurant, the Winery, silversmith demonstrations, and shops.
  • Zone 3 (Lower) – Anchor Bay with the swimming area, boat trips, the Beach Bar (summer only), inflatable water features, and floating sun deck.

Is Popeye Village Worth It?

Based on hundreds of Popeye Village reviews online and our own visit, the honest answer is: yes – if you go in with the right expectations.

This is not a large-scale theme park like Disneyland. It is a small, charming, open-air attraction built around a 45-year-old film set. The magic is in the setting – a colourful wooden village perched on cliffs above crystal-clear turquoise water – not in thrilling rides or cutting-edge technology.

  • The setting is genuinely unique – nowhere else in Malta looks like this. One of the best spots for Popeye Village photos in all of Malta.
  • The entry fee covers almost everything – boat trips, live shows, silversmith, mini golf, splash pools, cinema, swimming, sun beds, parasols, and showers.
  • The swimming at Anchor Bay is excellent – clear, calm, sheltered water with Red Cross Malta lifeguards in summer.
  • 3-4 hours of content for families with young children (ages 3-10).
  • ❌ Not a large theme park – allow 2 to 4 hours.
  • ❌ Can feel crowded in July-August, especially between 11am and 2pm.
  • ❌ Limited shade in certain areas.
  • ❌ Uneven paths and steps between buildings – tricky with pushchairs.

Most Popeye Village Malta reviews rate the experience 4 out of 5, particularly praising the setting, the boat trips, the character shows, and the swimming. The most common criticism is that it feels small for the price – but once you factor in that the ticket covers all activities including boat trips and water features, the value is solid.

Can You Swim at Popeye Village?

Yes – you can swim at Popeye Village Malta. Anchor Bay, the cove directly in front of Sweethaven Village, has a small pebble and rock beach with clear, calm, turquoise water. It is sheltered from open sea currents by the natural shape of the bay, making it generally safe for families with children. Red Cross Malta lifeguards are on duty during the summer months.

The water entry is rocky – water shoes are strongly recommended. The seabed is a mix of pebbles, rocks, and sand. Once you are in the water, it is beautiful – clear visibility, calm surface, and the colourful village as your backdrop.

In high season (June-September), the bay also features inflatable water features – an assault course, floating trampolines, climbing structures, and a floating sun deck, all anchored in the water. These are included in your entry ticket. The bay is also the departure point for the on-site boat trips that take you around the coastline.

Popeye Village Malta swimming is genuinely one of the best parts of the visit. Many visitors spend 1-2 hours just swimming and sunbathing at Anchor Bay after exploring the village. Bring a towel and swimwear – sun beds, parasols, and showers are available and included in your ticket. Lockers are available for rent at the Beach Bar during summer.

Popeye Village Viewpoint

One of the most underrated parts of visiting Popeye Village Malta is the Popeye Village viewpoint – a raised vantage point on the cliff above the village offering the classic aerial shot of the colourful wooden houses against the turquoise Mediterranean. This is the angle behind most iconic Popeye Village Malta images you see online and on postcards.

The viewpoint is located on the road leading down to the entrance. You can stop here before or after your visit – it is accessible without a ticket. There is a small viewing platform with railings.

📸 Photography tip: Visit early morning (before 10am) for the best light. The village faces roughly northeast, so morning sun lights up the colourful buildings beautifully. By mid-afternoon, parts of the village fall into shadow from the surrounding cliffs. Early morning also means fewer crowds in your photos.

This viewpoint is one of the most photographed spots in all of Malta. Even if you decide not to enter the village, the view from above is worth the detour.

Guided Tours

Several operators offer a Malta Popeye Village tour as part of a northern Malta day trip, often combined with the Red Tower, Mellieha Bay beach, Golden Bay, and the Cirkewwa area. These tours typically cost €35-50 per person and include transport from your hotel in St Julian’s or Sliema. Available through GetYourGuide, Viator, and local operators. A great option if you don’t have a rental car.

Popeye Village Malta Review – Our Verdict

Edificio in legno colorato rosso bianco e blu con corde e decorazioni nautiche all\'interno del Popeye Village Malta

Sweethaven Village Malta is genuinely unique. There is nowhere else in Malta – arguably nowhere in the Mediterranean – that looks quite like it. The combination of film history, colourful architecture, sea swimming in a sheltered cove, and family-friendly activities makes it a well-rounded day out that justifies the entry price.

We visited on a weekday in July and spent approximately 3 hours on site. The village itself took about an hour to explore thoroughly (every building, the museum, the movie room, the silversmith). We then spent 30 minutes watching a character show and doing the boat trip, and finished with about an hour of swimming in Anchor Bay. The water was excellent – clear, calm, and the village as a backdrop makes it unlike any other swimming spot on the island.

The food at the Sea Farers Restaurant was decent and not overpriced. We paid around €10 for a pasta dish and €3 for a drink. Free popcorn at the Cinema and a free postcard at the Souvenir Shop were nice touches.

Best for: Families with children (especially ages 3-10), photography lovers, cinema history fans, first-time visitors to Malta looking for something different from the usual beach day.

Less suited for: Travellers seeking large-scale theme parks or thrill rides, visitors with mobility issues (many steps and uneven paths), anyone looking for a full-day attraction (2-4 hours is the maximum).

Overall rating: 4/5

💡 Combine it with: If you are spending the day in northern Malta, pair Popeye Village with Mellieha Bay beach (10 minutes away – the longest sandy beach in Malta), the Red Tower (15 minutes), or a sunset at Golden Bay (20 minutes). For nightlife fans, head back to Paceville in the evening – check our events calendar to see what’s on that night. For more activities in Malta, browse our full activities page.

Practical Tips Before You Visit

  • Book tickets online in advance when available – queues at the entrance can be 20-30 minutes long in July-August, especially between 10am and 12pm. Online tickets are non-refundable.
  • Arrive early. Before 10am is ideal. Best light for photos at the viewpoint, shorter queues, easier parking, fewer crowds.
  • Bring water shoes. Essential for swimming at Anchor Bay. The entry is rocky and the seabed is pebbles.
  • Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water. Limited shade in parts of the village. Maltese summer sun is intense (35°C+).
  • Wear comfortable shoes. Lots of steps and uneven wooden walkways. Heels or smooth-soled shoes are a bad idea.
  • Combine with northern Malta. Mellieha Bay beach, the Red Tower, Golden Bay, or the Cirkewwa viewpoint over Gozo and Comino.
  • Check the Christmas schedule if visiting in December – festive events include a Santa grotto, themed shows, and free Jumparound.
  • Visitors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult (18+).
